DIGITAL AUDIO VISUAL PROJECTS

ECOSYSTEMIC GENERATIVE STUDIES

The examples below illustrate some studies made as part of a project which explored the application of ecosystemic process in electronic media arts.

An ecosystem is an ecological concept that is used to describe the complex networks of relations between living organisms (humans, ants, fish, birds etc) and the abiotic environment (sun, water, soil etc). Ecosystemic processes such as the transformation of energy and matter, competition, symbiosis and evolution are responsible for the aesthetic and dynamic beauty of the natural world and offer rich inspiration both conceptually and technically for the development of generative and interactive digital art.

SIMPLE ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS FOR INTERACTIVE AND GENERATIVE MUSIC

The examples below illustrate some studies which explore the use of adaptive systems for music making.

In practical terms, I wanted to create active instruments for use in improvised electro-acoustic performance and installation. Simple dynamical systems are an attractive starting as they are responsive pattern generators: the state dynamics can often be qualitatively controlled and are responsive to input, allowing a human performer to interact, whilst the algorithm retains a degree of autonomy (dynamically) - meaning that the performer must in term constantly adapt to their changing output.
